First Spouses Youth ChalleNGe National Outreach Initiative
The National Guard Youth Foundation is pleased to support the First Spouses Youth ChalleNGe National Outreach Initiative. This unique bi-partisan initiative brings First Spouses from across the United States together to address issues surrounding at-risk youth. The purpose of the initiative is to gain the support of First Spouses as part of a coalition that advocates the expansion of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program to all 50 states and U.S. territories.
With nearly 3,000 kids dropping out of high school every school day in the U.S., a growing number of First Spouses are joining the initiative to raise awareness and educate policy and opinion leaders in their state legislatures and on Capitol Hill about the very successful and effective National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program. The program helps at-risk youth improve life skills, education levels, fitness and employment potential. Youth ChalleNGe provides a forum for dropouts to return to high school, earn a GED, enroll in college, start a career or join the military.
Current members of the First Spouses Youth ChalleNGe National Outreach Initiative are: Mrs. Nancy Murkowski of Alaska, Mrs. Kim Henry of Oklahoma, Mr. Dan Mulhern of Michigan, Mrs. Barbara Richardson of New Mexico, Mrs. Mary Easley of North Carolina, Mrs. Mary Oberst of Oregon, Mrs. Anita Perry of Texas, Mrs. Gayle Manchin of West Virginia, Mrs. Verma Mendez Pastor – wife of Representative Pastor of Arizona, and Mrs. Susan Allen – wife of Senator Allen of Virginia.
