TEEN FINDS SUCCESS IN ALTERNATIVES

"I don't know what it feels like to jump off of an airplane or climb massive mountains. I can't tell you what it feels like to win a trophy or risk my life for the freedom of this country. I don't even know how it feels to fight a battle, let alone win one. But if I've ever felt those accomplishments and utter pride before, it would have to be right here, right now. To me, standing here has become my plunge, my climb, my trophy, freedom and my fighting battle."
So said 18-year-old Ashley Hart during her high school graduation speech after completing the Oregon National Guard's Youth Challenge Program. The West Linn resident says her experience was a "miracle."
